Combative, energetic midfielder who joined Hednesford in June 2026 from EFL Championship side Bolton Wanderers

 

Also referred to as Sonny Sharples-Ahmed courtesy of his Egyptian father, Salford-born Sharples is a product of the Bolton youth system, signing professional forms for the Trotters in the summer of 2023 after several years in the youth ranks

His first team debut for Bolton came shortly into the 2023-2024 season as he came on as a late substitute in their EFL Trophy game against Stockport County in November 2023. The following month saw Sharples loaned out to Northern Premier League neighbours Bamber Bridge for a month, making only one substitute appearance at Bradford (Park Avenue) just before Christmas

After several appearances among the substitutes over the following months, Sharples was handed his league debut by Bolton in December 2024, coming on in a 3-1 win over Mansfield Town in League One. He remained a regular face amongst the substitutes for Bolton as they just missed out on the play-offs at the end of the season

Having qualified to play for Egypt through his father, Sharples was called up to their U23 side in March 2025, making his debut against Qatar U23 and playing three times for the side overall during this international period

In November 2025, Sharples was allowed to join National League South high-flyers Torquay United on a three-month loan, although this ended in January 2026 with the player only making a handful of substitute appearances. Instead, he headed north and joined National League North side Spennymoor Town on a three-month loan later in the month

​

In June 2026, the ambitious Pitmen highlighted Sharples' ability at the base of midfield as a key acquisition for their return to the National League North for 2026-2027, agreeing an undisclosed fee with Bolton to bring Sharples to Keys Park as their fourth new face of the summer
